DECISION FOR LIFE

Birth was a painful process
now my life reflects more pain
If it was my choice to be emitted into the womb,
as a sperm, would I have met the egg?
Would I have lingered behind with the rest of my kind and died off with the others instead?

If I had known that making it
would mean disappointment, sorrow, grief, and life trials,
would I have fought against gravity the way that I did?
Racing at a fast pace the way that I did, or would I let other sperm cells lead by a mile?

Would I have made that connection,
knowing that loved ones would leave, friends would deceive?
Some would leave my heart broken or would I have turned the other way,
letting the others lead the way and offer life to them as a token?

Would I have fought to enter
a world that oppresses me,
where the color of skin determines your fate?
If I were so intelligent, wouldn't I have been more hesitant and let another sperm enter life's gate?

If I had known that making it
would mean disappointment, sorrow, grief and life trials,
would I have fought against gravity the way that I did,
racing at a fast pace the way that I did,
or would I have let other sperm cells lead by a mile?

Would I have made that connection,
knowing that I'd face rejection,
and feel lonely at times without care;
or would I have made a proper decision and refused this admission,
Sacrifice myself for another sperm there?

However I chose life,
went against all the odds,
was determined, persistent to make it,
now since I'm here. Facing all these trials,
not my self, or no one else is going to take it.

Although birth was a painful process,
and my life reflects more pain.
as a sperm I decided, me and that egg would be united,
in this struggle I would pay the price.
The decision was made, so the price would be paid,
there's no greater gift than this thing called life.

Caressed Spirits, the much anticipated volume of poetry by Carlos Muhammad, published by Luv4Self Publishing.
